There is this conversation that takes place inside my head nearly every day. One that nudges me towards some kind of creative action. Whether it be to film, travel, write, share, or create a photograph. And every day, it often ends the same way, with a list of excuses. Justifications that tell me the lack of money, time, equipment, or even ability is to blame. It is a type of creative paralysis that is ultimately fueled by fear. That loud and obnoxious fear that is a constant reminder that what I attempt to create may not be good enough, or worst yet, that I may ultimately fail.
In nearly 30 years of photographing I have learned that failure is actually a vital part of the creative process. It is what teaches you, pushes you, and takes your creativity to a higher plane. I have created many failed images, films, and articles through the years. Not just once or twice, but literally tens of thousands of times. And I still continue to fail even today. So, when it comes to failure, embrace it, do not fear it for it is a vital ingredient towards success.
In trying to overcome this creative paralysis, this fear of failure, I have learned the key is to simply start. Yes, there will be failures along the way, and that is okay. If you keep at it, one success will eventually become two, then three and the creative process marches onward. In the end, as you look back on your journey you will see that you have created an entire body of work. But you first need to start!
If you are currently feeling the same creative paralysis that I often do, may I encourage you to just start, and start today. If you are afraid of failure, don’t worry, you are not alone, I will be failing right there with you.
